Speed device helps cut truck accidents
POLICE in Hongkou District will attempt to reduce the number of collisions involving commercial vehicles by introducing a speed-monitoring device for trucks, officials said yesterday.
The new device, developed by police in Hongkou with the help of a veteran truck driver surnamed Wei, monitors the speed of vehicles when they are turning. When the speed surpasses 10 kilometers per hour, it records the violation and sends an alert to the company’s managers.
If they continue to drive too fast, the companies can use the data as evidence when they hold them accountable, said Wei.
The device was installed by district police in 150 large trucks owned by one company at the end of 2014 as part of a pilot program.
Only 2 accidents involving trucks turning right occurred in 2015, compared to 16 in 2014, said police. There have been no accidents of that type so far this year.
Now that the effectiveness of the device has been established, police in Hongkou said they will expand its use to all truck companies in the area.
Drivers of large trucks are prone to causing accidents when they turn right due to blind spots and other factors.
At least five people were killed in the second half year of 2014 in such accidents, including one in the Pudong New Area in which a truck collided with a bicycle.
