Start date for Line 8 extension

WORK is set to begin soon on the third stage of Metro Line 8, mainly covering the Pujiang Town area of Minhang District, it is reported.

This phase, currently undergoing environmental evaluation, will have six elevated stations along its 6.6-kilometer route, all inside Pujiang Town in the south of the city, eastday.com reported yesterday. The work is expected to complete by 2015.

According to a preliminary plan, the new phase will start from the Shendu Highway Station, heading south to Sanlu Highway, Minrui Road, Puhang Road and Dongcheng No. 1 Road, before terminating at the Huizhen Road Station.

It is claimed that the third phase will be relatively independent of the existing Line 8 route, as it will have a separate start station near the current Shendu Highway Station, although transfers will be possible.

The four or five-carriage trains will be equipped with rubber wheels, reported eastday.com. They are less noisy but have a reduced operational capacity compared to those fitted with steel wheels.

The route going through some residential areas in Pujiang Town has been described as a trial along the lines of the “neighborhood subway” in Singapore.

The Metro operator did not comment on the Line 8 reports.
