Streets under water as rain falls too fast for drains

HEAVY rain yesterday morning caused problems in the city with more than 10 streets flooded and workers at the Jing'an Temple Metro station having to clear drains to allow water to escape more quickly.

An underpass under construction on Qilianshan Road suffered flooding 120 centimeters deep.

Shanghai flood control headquarter said yesterday's rainfall, which fell mainly between 9am and 10am, was at least 77 millimeters in Baoshan, Hongkou and Yangpu districts and the Pudong New Area. The Sanjiagang area in Pudong recorded 147 millimeters.

The hourly rainfall in some areas was measured at 42 millimeters, surpassing the city's average drainage capacity which is 36 millimeters per hour.

The weather is expected to ease a little over the next few days, with maximum temperatures climbing over 30 degrees Celsius, and the rest of the week will be mainly cloudy with frequent showers.
