Summer heat defies White Dew
SWELTERING weather returned today with the highest temperature soaring over 35 degrees Celsius in the city's suburban Jiading District, quite unusual compared with normal years.
Today is called White Dew, one of the 24 solar terms on the Chinese lunar calendar, indicating weather is getting cooler as temperature falls.
Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said today's heat was caused by a strong subtropical high but it should not last long with showers expected on Friday and Saturday.
The weather tomorrow would be the same as today, cloudy, with temperatures ranging from 26 degrees to 34 degrees.
Meanwhile, this year's 10th tropical storm is forming in the western Pacific, south of Taiwan and east of the South China Sea, the bureau said. The storm is still unnamed and it is unclear whether it would affect the city in the coming days.
