Sun, clouds to share weekend sky

TODAY will be a mixed bag of sunshine and clouds, with a low of 5 degrees Celsius and a high of 11, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said yesterday.

The air quality is forecast to be slightly polluted in the morning, but should improve as the day goes on, it said.

Tomorrow will be overcast with some rain, while the mercury will range between 3 and 10 degrees.

The lowest and highest temperatures recorded yesterday at the benchmark Xujiahui weather station were 7.1 and 10.8 degrees, the bureau said.

The annual Lantern Festival falls on Monday, and revelers should prepare for rain, though the temperature will be little changed from the weekend.

The biggest crowds are expected at Yuyuan Garden in Huangpu District, though anyone planning to visit the tourist attraction, which is this year boasting 50 lantern installations, should keep a close eye on social media for the latest “crowd updates.”

The operators of the garden said yesterday they will publish the number of visitors on its Wechat and Weibo accounts, with updates provided every two hours. The same data will be available via the Huangpu District government’s website.

Security was tightened at tourist sites across Shanghai in the wake of the tragedy on the Bund on New Year’s Eve in 2014. Last year’s Lantern Festival at Yuyuan Garden was canceled entirely.

This year there will be controls on entrances and exits, while restrictions will also be in place on the garden’s famous zigzag bridge. Full details are available via the official social media accounts.

Meanwhile, the subway operator said it expects the number of people using Yuyuan Garden station on Line 10 on Monday to surpass 140,000.

As a result, the No. 1 gate will be open only to passengers leaving the station, while the No. 4 gate will be solely for those going in, the company said.

Yuyuan Garden will be open only to ticket holders from 4pm onwards today and tomorrow, and from 2pm on Monday.

The lantern displays will remain in place until Thursday.
