Taiwan Trips In Demand For Holiday Season

TRIPS to Taiwan are proving very popular for the forthcoming Spring Festival holiday, with travel companies reporting tours solidly booked. However, booming demand has led to big price increases on packages.

According to, China's leading online travel service platform, people are paying around 10,000 yuan (US$1,500) for a trip to Taiwan for six to eight days during the holiday - twice the usual cost.

"Spring Festival is the most popular season for trips to Taiwan," said He Jing, an official with Ctrip. "In addition, most people from Taiwan living in Shanghai go back home for the Spring Festival, so flights are heavily booked anyway."

After the holiday, the price of packages will drop to usual levels, said agencies.

Officials said in addition to traditional around-the-island tours, popular with seniors, new Taiwan packages will be available this year. People can choose to go on a short trip for several days, or just to see a show.

Earlier, Taiwan media said the region may open up to individual tourists from the Chinese mainland - with Beijing and Shanghai piloting the scheme in April. Currently, tourism is restricted to tour groups. But China's mainland tourism authorities haven't commented on this.
