Testing starts on airports Metro line

THE Shanghai Metro operator announced yesterday that trains are being tested on the Line 2 extensions that will connect the city's two airports before the Expo starts.

The line currently runs through 17 stations with trains running every three to four minutes.

The operator, Shanghai Shentong Group, said train intervals on the extended line have not been decided and has not revealed the travel time between the two airports.

The operator said the line "may greatly change people's transport options to the airports." Travelers usually take taxis or the Maglev for Pudong International Airport.

The extended line between the two airports will be 64 kilometers long with 30 stations, becoming one of city's longest subways.

At its western end the line will have two stations in the Hongqiao Transport Hub - one at a railway station and the other at the new terminal in Hongqiao International Airport.

The new terminal, as well as a new runway, will open on March 16.
