Tests begin on Hongqiao's second runway
TEST flights began today at Hongqiao International Airport's second runway ahead of the opening of a second terminal next Tuesday.
From now until next Monday, the runway will be open for up to two hours a day to test capacity, the regional air traffic authority announced today.
The new runway will be in full service by then, with both allowing 33 landings and take-offs at the airport each hour.
Officials said the new runway will mainly be used for take-offs after March 28, while the original runway will mostly be used for landings.
That is aimed to increase capacity to more than 40 planes an hour.
