Torrential rain hits Shanghai in the afternoon
Shanghai will continue to be impacted by rain before 6:30pm today, according to local weather forecasters.
The weather authorities renewed a stormy rain warning issued at 4:28pm today, upgrading it from a yellow alert to an orange one, which is the second-to-the-highest in the three-level system. The warning was lifted at about 5:30pm as the rain weakens. But people are still warned to take precautions outdoors as it’s still heavy in some northern parts of the city.
Heavy rain started in Shanghai in the early afternoon and by 4:30pm, the rain has accumulated to 50 millimeters in 3 hours.
The rain has brought a major drop in temperature. Some districts were recorded with temperatures below 30 degrees Celsius, bringing temporary relief from the continuous heat. In downtown Xujiahui area, the temperature at 3:30pm was recorded as 27.1 degrees while in some suburban districts, it was slightly lower.
