Tour bus route may get the ax
A SIGHTSEEING bus route may be canceled as part of a plan to reduce repetition of routes, the Shanghai Transport and Port Authority said over the weekend.
The authority is considering canceling 51 bus routes, including the No. 1 Tour Bus, it said on its Website. The public was invited to give opinions until January 31 on the possible route cancellations.
The No. 1 Tour Bus starts at Shanghai Indoor Stadium and finishes at Huaihai Road M. near Longmen Road.
The route has proven unpopular, especially on weekdays, since it started in 2008.
A 30-minute interval between buses, the high cost and a partially open upper deck were cited as main reasons for the route's poor showing.
"Not many people are taking the tour bus," said Yu, an official with Bashi Xinxin, the company that runs the route. She said Bashi had not received any notice about its possible cancellation.
The No. 1 Tour Bus costs 3 yuan (44 US cents), which is 50 percent more than both the No. 42 and No. 926 buses that share a similar route.
Each tour bus usually carries about 20 people, said an employee surnamed Duan working on the bus route. She thought business was OK.
Meng Jie, a postgraduate in Nanjing, capital of neighboring Jiangsu Province, said the sightseeing bus should not be canceled as the double-decker buses are one of the "charms" of Shanghai.
Meng said she took the sightseeing bus and enjoyed the tour around the city's famous scenic spots.
"The World Expo is coming," she said. "It shouldn't be canceled right now."
Yang Ji, a local office worker, said the cancelation is a good idea since it's not necessary to have two or three bus routes along Huaihai Road as "it makes the road more crowded."
The transport authority said 15 new routes would be added. Most of these will link communities to Metro stations in the suburbs or travel from downtown to Chongming Island.
The No. 6 Tour Bus, from Shanghai Stadium to Jiading District, is also on the list of routes that may be canceled.
