Tourist sites will offer discounts
FORTY-TWO scenic spots in Shanghai will offer 50 percent discounts for a week during the Shanghai Tourism Festival in September, the Shanghai Tourism Bureau said yesterday.
The list includes many famous attractions including Oriental Pearl TV Tower, Chenshan Botanic Garden, Zhujiajiao Water Town, Jinjiang Amusement Park, Madame Tussauds Shanghai and Shanghai World Financial Center.
The week-long discounts will start on September 17.
It is the first time tourist attractions in the city will offer a 50 percent discount during the annual tourism festival, which runs from September 15 to October 6 this year.
Some hotels will also offer discounted suites during the festival, which will feature a float parade, fireworks shows, a beach carnival and water town weddings.
Zhao Lingling, who lives in the Pudong New Area, said she will take her son to the Shanghai Ocean Aquarium.
"I have never been to the aquarium due to its high admission fee, and I will take advantage of the discount to go with my son even if there are big crowds," Zhao said.
Admission to the aquarium is 160 yuan (US$25) for adults and 110 yuan for children. The half-price fees during the festival only apply to adults.
Forty attractions in the city offered half-price admission on China Tourism Day, which was on May 19 this year.
More than 310,000 people visited the sites, with many attractions recording big jumps in admission figures.
The Shanghai Science and Technology Museum welcomed 20,000 visitors, up 355 percent from the same period last year, Madame Tussauds had 8,000, up 150 percent, and the Oriental Pearl TV Tower 24,000, an increase of 25 percent.
Some visitors who took advantage of the half-price deal said admission fees for tourist attractions are too high.
