Traffic cameras focus on mobile phones

FOR the first time in Shanghai, traffic surveillance cameras are being used to spot motorists using mobile phones while driving, an offense punishable by a 200 yuan (US$30) fine and two license demerits.
In the past week, 30 drivers have been caught by three cameras in Songjiang District that are being used in a trial program to crack down on the offence, police said yesterday, adding that more road cameras will be used for that purpose in future.
“The offense is usually caught and punished at the scene by traffic officers, but police cannot spot every case because there are too many,” said Songjiang police officer Zhu Jing.
The three high-definition cameras are located on the busiest parts of Jiasong Highway, Rongle Road and Jiuting Avenue.
The cameras previously served only to assist criminal investigators and monitor traffic flow.
Zhu said officers examined hundreds of pictures taken by the cameras every day, looking for drivers holding phones. He added that the cameras are also used to look for drivers who are not buckled up.
