Traffic restrictions in place for Shanghai marathon

Traffic along the Bund, Nanjing Road and Huaihai Road will be restricted on Sunday when the city hosts the annual marathon race.
The 18th Shanghai International Marathon has attracted about 35,000 athletes, including 5,558 foreigners — a record in the race’s history.
The full marathon covers 42 kilometers while the half marathon is 21 kilometers.
There are also other events like the mini-marathon and the 10-kilometer race.
Last year’s men’s marathon winner, Kenya’s Sylvester Teimet Kimeli, will be in the line-up again along with French long-distance runner Abraham Kiprotich.
The marathon will begin at 7am from Chen Yi Square on the Bund and end at the Shanghai Stadium in Xuhui District, passing through Zhongshan Road E1, Jinling Road E., Henan Road S., Nanjing Road E., Nanjing Road W., Huashan Road, Changshu Road, Huaihai Road M., Xizang Road S., Longhua Road, Wanping Road S., Longteng Avenue, Longhua Road and Zhongshan Road S2.
The mini-marathon will finish at the Shanghai Exhibition Center on Nanjing Road W., while the 10-kilometer race will end at Fuxing Park.
Road closure
Police said these roads will be closed temporarily from 7am to 1:30pm. Traffic on Zhongshan Road E1, Dianchi Road, Beijing Road E., Nanjing Road E. and Nansuzhou Road will be blocked from 5:30am to 7:30am.
The Jiangxi Road exit on the Yan’an Elevated Road will be closed from 7am to 7:45am while the Huashan Road exit will be shut between 7am and 8:30am.
The Huaihai Road exit of North-South Elevated Road will be closed from 7:15am to 9am.
Buses on the race route will either be suspended or their routes shorten, police said, adding that some of the buses may make a detour and continue operation.
The two ferry lines on the Huangpu River will stop services from 7am to 11am. Four ferry docks — Tangqiao Dock and Nanmatou Dock in Pudong and Dongjiadu Dock and Lujiabang Road Dock in Puxi — will be closed, police said.

About 8,000 runners will compete in the full marathon while 10,000 will take part in the half marathon.
Another 12,000 runners will compete in the 4.5-kilometer-long mini-marathon. Organizers said 5,000 runners have signed up for the 10-kilometer race, which is a new event and the highlight of the year.
The marathon has attracted many young people with about 40 percent of them in the 20-to-40 age group. A third of the runners are women.
A total of 5,558 foreigners are competing in the race — up 6.4 percent from last year and setting a new record.
The runners will pass many landmarks and famous scenic spots in Shanghai like the Customs House, Peace Hotel, Shanghai Museum, Shanghai Grand Theater, Jing’an Temple, Nanpu Bridge, Lupu Bridge and Longhua Temple.
The organizers have arranged for 100,000 bottles of water and beverages. Some 200 medical staff, 120 nursing volunteers, 4,000 police will be at hand to ensure the safety of the runners.
There are 12 medical aid spots along the route, and 266 mobile toilets — up from 190 toilets last year.
The full marathon winner will walk away with US$45,000. Another US$100,000 has been kept aside for a world record feat.
