Transfer hall ready to open at Xujiahui station

PASSENGERS will be able to transfer between Metro Line 1 and Line 9 when a new transit hall opens on Wednesday at the Xujiahui station, the city's Metro operator said yesterday.

The long-awaited transit hall, partly converted from an underground garage beneath Grand Gateway Mall, was due to open on April 1 but the opening was delayed because equipment was still being tested, said Shanghai Shentong Group.

The passage will be one of the system's busiest when it opens, with 22 entrances and exits among its 1,600 square meters.

Previously passengers had to pass through ticket turnstiles and buy a new ticket or reswipe their transport card to transfer between Lines 1 and 9 at Xujiahui.

The new transit hall means they'll only have to walk along a 200-meter tunnel to transfer lines.

Metro officials also reminded passengers that the northern platform of Line 1 at Xujiahui will be closed from 8pm tomorrow until 8am Wednesday. Signs will reroute passengers.
