Transport hub for seaside boom town

LINGANG New Town, which sits on the southeast tip of Pudong and near the Yangshan Deep-water Port, will soon have a transport hub for Metro Line 16, buses, taxies and rental bikes, local authorities announced recently.

The seaside town is also developed to attract homes from downtown as the city tries to reduce population density in its urban districts.

Shanghai Urban Construction Design & Research Institute has won the bid to design the terminal complex to be located by the Dishui Lake in the heart of the town. The complex will have 73,300 square meters of built-up space and underground levels leading to the Metro station.

In addition to ground-level bus and taxi stations, rental bike stands will be available as well to encourage zero-emission travel, the designers said, adding that the transport hub is expected to bring more tourists to the town.

About 45 percent of land in Lingang New Town is reclaimed from the sea. Dishui (Waterdrop) Lake, the town's symbol, is the largest artificial lake in China. By 2020, the town will become a population center complete with commercial facilities, schools and hospitals.
