Travel services at full stretch as holiday gets people moving
AN increasing number of passengers left the city over the New Year holiday this year, officials said yesterday.
Shanghai's two major long-distance bus stations handled more than 162,000 passengers over the past four days.
"Services to neighboring provinces were popular," said bus station officials.
Shanghai South Long-distance Bus Station saw some 85,000 passengers leave the city since December 31, a 21.5 percent jump compared to the previous New Year holiday.
The station put on nearly 300 services on routes to the Yangtze River Delta region such as Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces.
The station took 1,470 passengers, double the previous 700, to Zhejiang's Zhoushan Island via a sea-crossing bridge which opened to traffic last month.
Shanghai General Long-distance Bus Station said its daily passenger volume was more than 20,000 during the three-day holiday, a 25 percent rise.
Drivers bound for Zhejiang's Hangzhou City enjoyed an easier trip as a city section of the G60, or Shanghai-Kunming Expressway, reopened before the holiday after lane expansion.
Shanghai-Jiaxing-Huzhou Expressway, a new expressway which opened on December 31, also provided a fast route between the city's Pudong International Airport and Zhejiang.
The city's two railway stations said their passenger peak was on January 1, with passenger turnover reaching 182,000.
The total passenger volume at railway stations is likely to surpass the estimated 622,000 since December 31.
More 3,000 people flew from the Pudong International Aiport on January 1 to places a short distance away, such as Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan for shopping, entry-exit inspection authorities said.
