Trucker dies in rear-end crash

A truck driver was killed in a three-vehicle-crash yesterday on the Outer Ring Road in the Pudong New Area.

The accident happened at 9:30am on the S20 near the ramp of Luoshan Road, traffic authorities said. The truck, carrying tons of reinforced concrete, hit the rear of a cargo sedan. The concrete smashed through the driving cabin of the truck on impact, killing the driver.

Witnesses said the ropes tying the cargo broke in the collision.

The sedan driver, surnamed Tang, said he was braking when suddenly his vehicle was hit. "Luckily I did not crash into the vehicles ahead," Tang said.

Another vehicle was damaged by the falling concrete.

The 42-year-old truck driver surnamed Cheng and in his 40s, was not carried out until firefighters arrived using equipment to cut the cabin loose. He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
