Tunnel to close for upgrade

THE Dapu Road Tunnel, the city's oldest passage under the Huangpu River, will be closed to traffic on Saturday for renovations after 38 years in service.

The tunnel is expected to reopen before next year's Shanghai World Expo with the number of lanes doubled to four and it could be in use for another 50 years from then, according to the Shanghai Evening Post today.

The 2.7-kilometer tunnel is currently the only one downtown which trucks can use to cross under the Huangpu River. On average 2,587 vehicles use the tunnel every hour - the original capacity was intended to be just 670 vehicles an hour.

Cross-river traffic from Shanghai's Xuhui District in Puxi to the Shangnan area in Pudong is expected to be disrupted.

Buses will take the Xizhang South Road Tunnel which will open this month while trucks are being told to take the Shangzhong Road Tunnel and Xupu Bridge. Other vehicles can use the Nanpu and Lupu bridges outside of rush hours.
