Two die in chain-reaction crash

TWO people died and another two were injured in an accident involving a number of vehicles yesterday in the Pudong New Area.

The accident happened at about 9am on Pusan Road near Xinpu Road, police said.

Witnesses saw a minivan suddenly brake, causing a sedan behind it to swerve.

The sedan hit the guardrail to the left before veering right and crashing into the sidewalk.

A van behind the sedan then ran into the back of it, witnesses said. The man and a woman in the sedan were killed.

When it hit the guardrail, the sedan knocked several pieces of it into the opposite lane.

A No. 789 bus swerved to avoid the fragments and crashed into the sidewalk. Trying to avoid the bus, a mail minibus behind swerved and crashed into a pole.

Bus passenger Chen Guanggui, 89, suffered a rib fracture and is in hospital. Fellow passenger Sheng Xiufang received treatment for a cut above the eye.

Police and rescue workers were soon at the scene and cordoned off Pusan Road.

Traffic flow was back to normal by 12:30pm.
