Typhoon Morakot to bring rain, strong winds to Shanghai

RAIN and strong winds are expected to hit Shanghai tonight as typhoon Morakot approaches the provinces of Fujian and Zhejiang, weathermen said.

Wind and rain will increase as the night progresses and tomorrow wind gusts will be 50 to 74 kilometers an hour downtown and more than 89 kilometers an hour at sea and in Yangshan Deep Water Port, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said.

Morakot is likely to become the first typhoon to hit the city this year. It has the potential to become a strong typhoon in the next 24 to 48 hours. The wind speed could rise to between 150 and 183kph in the center of the typhoon.

Morakot, which means turquoise in Thai, strengthened into a typhoon at 2pm yesterday afternoon from a tropical storm with the center over the sea about 1,100 kilometers east of Taiwan Island.

It is moving toward Zhejiang and Fujian provinces at 15 to 20 kilometers per hour and is gaining strength.

Today it will hover between 26 and 32 degrees.
The temperature will range between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius from tomorrow through Sunday.
Tropical storm Goni lashed Taishan in Guangdong Province early yesterday, bringing intense rainfall to parts of southern China.
