Typhoon prompts cancellation of Shanghai-Okinawa flights

CHINA Eastern Airlines canceled two flights to Japan today as Typhoon Neoguri was moving from the Pacific Ocean toward China's coastal areas.

The airline canceled outbound Flight MU287 from Pudong International Airport to Okinawa's Naha International Airport in the afternoon, along with the return flight MU288, the Shanghai-based carrier announced.

The airline expected the typhoon will hit the Naha airport around 6pm and then move northeast, an official with the airline said.

Another local flight to Okinawa, with the Juneyao Airlines, remained in operation. Juneyao Flight HO1331 was delayed by about 30 minutes and took off from Pudong at 12:15pm, according to the airport authority.

The typhoon was located 1,180 kilometers southeast of Taipei at 5pm yesterday, with wind speeds of up to 180km per hour at the center, the National Meteorological Center said. It is forecast to arrive in the southeastern part of the East China Sea tomorrow morning. It will bring strong gales to the Yangtze River estuary, the center said.
