VIPs told to heed road rules
EMERGENCY vehicles and some vehicles for government officials have license to run red lights and dodge other traffic laws while doing their jobs.
But they won't be allowed to abuse that privilege, Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng said yesterday - especially not with the city's traffic so congested.
"Vehicles for the government departments should set a good example," said the mayor at a meeting on addressing traffic snarls.
Han cited a report from traffic police that showed 57 cases of privileged vehicles breaking traffic regulations or laws from October 6 to October 29.
Some traffic police officers went easy on those vehicles, which broke laws on purpose, said Han.
He wants it to stop.
"Police officers shall check those vehicles strictly," said Han, requesting a count of violations each month.
