Vacation starts with warm, dry weather but cold front on way

Weather forecasters are calling for pleasant and dry conditions to start the National Day holiday although a cold front is expected to arrive in mid week and bring temperatures down up to 5 degrees Celsius.

The temperature will range from 20 to 28 degrees Celsius today and tomorrow, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said.

By Thursday, the mercury will dip to between 20 and 24 degrees with a chance of light rain. The bureau added the suburbs could feel even chillier, with lows slipping down to 15 or 16 degrees.

Light air pollution is expected to continue for the next few days as particulate matter is being blown into the city from northern China.

The air was lightly polluted yesterday with the AQI reaching 125 in the afternoon with PM2.5 being the main pollutant, the Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center said.

The center said pollutants were able to accumulate in the air due to a lack of wind.

The AQI should drop gradually from tomorrow and air quality is forecast to be good by either Wednesday or Thursday.

In the meantime, the center warned children, seniors and people with heart or respiratory illnesses to reduce strenuous outdoor activities.

The Shanghai Meteorological Bureau still hasn’t declared the arrival of autumn.

The bureau declares the official beginning of autumn once the temperature averages below 22 degrees for five straight days. The first of those five days is then declared the first day of autumn.

“The arrival of autumn doesn’t mean too much,” said Fu Yi, a chief service officer at the bureau. “There will still be some warm days even after autumn arrives.

“The important thing for residents is to note any sudden changes in temperatures and dress accordingly.”
