Venues slash entry fees for Tourism Day

TO celebrate China Tourism Day, which this year falls on Monday, 48 of the city’s leading attractions are offering half-price admission.

Among the venues taking part are the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, Shanghai Wildlife Park, Ocean Aquarium, Chenshan Botanical Garden, and fee-charging spots inside Fengjing Water Town.

A similar promotion last year led to huge visitor numbers. The Oriental Pearl TV Tower said that as a result of the special deals it offered the number of people entering before 4pm rose to a record 25,000.

Happy Valley Amusement Park, Shanghai Wildlife Park and Fengjing Water Town also said their visitor numbers doubled on Tourism Day, which always falls on May 19.

This year marks the fifth year of the scheme, which was launched in response to claims from the public that admission prices at many of the city’s attractions were too high.

Meanwhile, the Oriental Pearl TV Tower said yesterday that it will open only from 8am to 2pm on Tuesday due to the start of the two-day Shanghai Summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia.
