Video shows rampant fare dodging in subways
A video clip showing 19 passengers evading Metro fares by leaping over or ducking under exit turnstiles in less than two minutes has drawn sharp criticism on the Internet.
The video, shot by a man surnamed Chen at Pudong's Longyang Road Station for Metro Line 2 during one afternoon rush hour, showed how rampant ticket-dodging is in the city's subways.
Chen posted the video online and urged authorities to strengthen law enforcement. His appeal has drawn wide support from netizens.
Shanghai Metro management responded that fare evasion is "serious" at high-traffic stations in People's Square, Xujiahui and Shanghai Railway Station. It estimated that 2 to 3 percent of passengers dodged ticket machines every day. In 2011 alone, the Metro system lost some 10 million yuan.
Metro officials believe some 10,000 people don't pay for their journeys every day.
