Visa stain scam fails to dupe officials
THINGS don't always go better with Coke - as an American tourist discovered when he tried to enter Shanghai with an expired visa.
The traveler, identified only as Robert, attempted to dupe immigration officials at the Pudong International Airport on Friday by pouring the soft drink on his passport, making his visa date illegible.
He was planning to take a holiday in Shanghai but once on the aircraft discovered that his visa had expired by one day, airport police said.
Undaunted, Robert deliberately poured Coke on his passport before his flight reached Shanghai.
However, during immigration procedures at the Pudong airport, an officer surnamed Liu became suspicious. During questioning, Robert calmly said he had accidentally splashed Coke on his passport.
Liu reported to his supervisor and checks revealed that Robert's visa had expired on Thursday.
In the end, Robert admitted that he made the stain on purpose in a bid to slip through immigration.
He said by the time he realized his visa had expired, he was already on the plane to Shanghai.
Police said Robert was put on the return flight back to the United States.
