Waiting times on local bus route slashed

SHANGHAI Television Station yesterday reported that the intervals between buses that run near Jinyun Road station of Metro Line 13 in suburban Jiangqiao will be cut.

The time of the last bus will be changed to match the last subway train, but this won’t happen for at least nine months, the report said.

The decision was apparently taken after people complained.

In the past, the long intervals and short operating hours “forced many residents of the area to resort to unlicensed tricycles and motorbikes,” the television report said.

The report included shots of tricycles queuing near the station’s exit to illustrate the point.

A random person was quoted as saying: “I know the tricycles are not safe, but what can you do if you are in a hurry?”

The person went on to say: “I sometimes wait 20 minutes for a bus, and once had to wait half an hour.”

Other people, none of whom were identified, were heard on the report complaining about the bus service ending too early.

Apparently, the last bus leaves at 9pm from the Metro station, even though the last subway train doesn’t arrive until 11pm, which is almost two hours later.

Zhou Chong, who works for Jiading Public Transport Co, told Shanghai Daily in an exclusive interview that a plan had been drawn up to resolve the problem.

“We will expand the capacity of the Jiangqiao No. 2 bus service and cut the intervals from between 12 and 20 minutes to between 10 and 15 minutes by the end of March,” Zhou said, adding that four new drivers and two new vehicles are “expected” to join the fleet by the same date.

“The candidate drivers are at the last phase of their training,” he revealed.

Zhou went on to say that the company also aims “to extend the operating hours of the bus route to about 10 minutes after the last Metro train by the end of the year.”

He didn’t say why the change would take at least nine months to introduce.
