Weather indexes sought by bureau
HOW does the cabbie index, the outdoor activity index or the sun protection index sound for explaining Shanghai's weather?
The city weather authority has been seeking public opinion on which practical meteorological indexes they should use.
New indexes such as "taxi hailing," "travel" and "outdoor activities" under certain weather conditions might be launched this year, based on a survey online and in a local newspaper, said the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.
The campaign, which runs until the end of this month, aims to provide locals with more practical information than regular forecasts, officials explained.
More than 3,000 questionnaires have been received since the campaign was started last Monday.
"Some of the suggestions are really constructive, which we will consider seriously in order to improve our service," said Wang Yajuan, a weather forecaster and director of the campaign.
An outdoor activity index, proposed by an official of the city's education commission, could help schools schedule events during severe conditions such as typhoons, Wang explained.
"The index would be applied to many conditions and would be useful to teachers, students and employees," she said.
The new indexes will be available on the bureau's website www.soweather.com.
