Weather to be nice, but flower likely late
LOCALS may not be able to enjoy the fragrance of osmanthus during the Mid-Autumn Festival holiday next weekend, as the weather is unlikely to be suitable for the flower to bloom, said the Shanghai Botanical Garden.
Experts said cool weather can stimulate osmanthus buds to grow, and it takes five days or more for the buds to bloom. As the weather remains warm and mostly dry this week, osmanthus will probably miss the festival.
In Shanghai, osmanthus usually bloom in September or October, said the garden.
"So far the osmanthus here is all in bud shape and it still needs days to bloom," said Sun Jiayi, official of Century Park in the Pudong New Area. "Osmanthus blooms when the low is below 23 degrees Celsius for five consecutive days during which the precipitation should be more than 60 millimeters."
The low temperatures this week might meet the standard but the mostly dry weather should not help the blooming of the flowers, according to the forecast of the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.
Weather conditions should be mainly cloudy and stable this week with the mercury ranging from a low around 22 degrees Celsius to a high around 28 on most days, said the observatory.
Today is expected to be cloudy with temperatures between 22 to 29 degrees, said the observatory.
Showers may occur in the latter half of the week but should not be heavy, officials said.
The bureau said previously that the high this month should not reach 35 degrees again, which means the city is saying goodbye to scorchers and will not experience the usual Indian summer.
"In meteorological standard, the Indian summer only appears when the high reaches 35 degrees Celsius for two conservative days in the early half of September," said Man Liping, a chief service officer of the bureau.
