Worker in critical status after lightning struck in thunderstorms
ONE worker was struck by lightning during a thunderstorm while working on a construction site of a primary school in Shanghai on Wednesday afternoon. The worker was still in critical condition after being rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment.
The thunderstorm packed with heavy rains sweeping across the city while hail hit the southwestern area of and gales swept some other parts following a sunny morning noon.
Shanghai Meteorological Bureau warned such a mixed weather within the day may continue into next week, adding it would help cool down the heat. The maximum temperatures for the remaining week are expected to drop to about 33 degrees Celsius, the bureau forecast.
The hail started at about 2:48pm in the city's southwest Minhang District. Hailstones were as big as nine millimeter in diameter, the bureau said. Hailstones were reported to have slightly damaged some cars. No one was reported injured by the hailstones.
An orange storm alert, the second level of a four-scale warning system, was issued at 3:10pm and a yellow gale alert, the third level of the four-scale warning system, was issued earlier at 2:30pm.
