Xuhui District wants to be seen via two wheels

TOURISTS will have another way to see the old villas of Wukang Road, Hengshan Road and Huaihai Road M. starting next week:

By bicycle.

Local authorities said yesterday that more than 100 bikes will be available at seven renting sites, along with free brochures of scenic spots, said Xu, an official with the Xuhui District Tourism Bureau.

Xuhui District, famous for old villas and former residences of celebrities, is offering the service to encourage local people to travel in an environmentally friendly way.

The bikes, free for a ride of 10 minutes or less, will cost 2 yuan (29 US cents) for one hour and 4 yuan an hour when the time surpasses two hours.

Tourists will be able to buy a renting card at the Xuhui Tourism Consulting Center on Wukang Road, which will open this month.

The district will start with a trial through March 31. After that, Xu said, they might add more bikes if the program is popular.

Most of the rental sites will be on or near Huaihai Road M. and Hengshan Road.
