1,000 sign to donate organs
NEARLY 1,000 people have registered at Shanghai Red Cross by yesterday to donate their organs for patients with organ failure, or both organs and their body since December, officials said.
That's when Shanghai began human organ collection and transplants and announced the first group of 17 city-level hospitals to work under a national organ donation system in the city.
No donations under the system have been done yet in the city.
As one of the 17 hospitals, Zhongshan Hospital said yesterday that 10 of its officials signed organ donation forms under the watch of Shanghai Red Cross officials last week to promote organ donation in Shanghai. People now can register at the Red Cross by themselves or their family members can allow donations after their death.
Since China launched the system as a trial in 2010, 659 people donated 1,804 organs as of February 22.
