11 arraigned in 'brand ambassador' fraud case

AN 11-member fraud gang pretended to hire brand ambassadors for skincare products and cheated at least 80 victims of 1.44 million yuan (US$228,000). They were arraigned today in the Songjiang District People's Court.

The suspects, six men and five women in their 20s, were charged with fraud. Prosecutors said the chief suspect, Zhu Xuebo, 28, operated an unlicensed company in a residential complex in Sijing Town in Songjiang.

Zhu and three others hired people to call young women by phone, inviting them to be the brand ambassador of certain skincare products, and sent samples to them. Once a victim was taken in, they would charge her additional fees as costs for making commercials for them, the court heard.

Between June 2009 and April last year, the gang swindled nearly 1.44 million yuan out of at least 80 victims nationwide. One victim paid them 222,500 yuan.
