11 real-life heroes given Touching Shanghai awards

Eleven people have been given Touching Shanghai awards to recognize heroic and inspiring deeds between August 2012 and June of this year in Shanghai, officials said.

The 11 inspirational role models include Xu Lijia, China's first Olympic gold medalist in boat sailing; Zhou Chuanjin, a migrant worker who was injured fighting a pickpocket, and Zhang Xingru, an ophthalmologist who organized the treatment of more than 9,000 people with eye diseases in poverty-stricken areas.

Other recipients of the annual awards include those who have achieved great influence in their profession or are widely acknowledged in a certain field. There also were good Samaritans and common people who achieved extraordinary effects by doing ordinary things.

The Touching Shanghai award was launched in 2011 to send a positive message by presenting the stories of role models in a society in which people's attention is often dominated by bad news.
