13cm blade removed from man鈥檚 head
RENJI Hospital has successfully removed a 13-centimeter-long arc-shaped blade from a man’s head after a four-hour surgery, the hospital said yesterday.
The construction worker, surnamed Zhao, was admitted last Friday after the blade from a polishing machine flew off and hit him in the forehead.
When he was admitted, he was bleeding heavily and cerebrospinal fluid was flowing from the brain.
A CT scan showed the fracture cause by the broken blade had splintered bone in his forehead and damaged some brain tissue.
He almost lost his vision and the blade narrowly missed major blood vessels in his brain.
Surgeons removed the knife, bone fragments and damaged tissue and stopped the bleeding and then worked on rebuilding the damaged part of the skull.
The dura mater, the membrane which envelopes the brain and the spinal cord, was re-sealed.
Zhao is conscious and in a stable condition.
His language and motor functions have recovered and his vision is improving, the hospital said.
