19 arrested for dumping toxic garbage
NINETEEN people have been arrested for trying to dump more than 800 tons of garbage on an abandoned racing track in Shanghai’s Fengxian District.
News website xinmin.cn said the public tipped off police, sparking a joint investigation with environmental and other agencies.
The suspects were caught at an abandoned racing strip in Mincheng Road with 17 trucks of construction waste, some of which was rotting. Ten trucks had already dumped their load into a pit.
Two excavators had been used in the 100 meter by 50 meter pit and waste had been mixed and covered by earth, authorities said.
Regulations ban mixing waste and require all trash to be classified before being dumped. Investigations found the trash was carried into Fengxian from other districts in Shanghai, said the website.
It said the accused only dug pits at day and buried waste at night. After constant monitoring, officials stepped in.
Officials are still conducting tests and two more excavators have been brought in.
Authorities say they do not know how much had been dumped, but what remains will be disposed of properly.
Investigations continue.
It is the latest in a spate of environmental cases. Four crew members of a ship and two officials of a garbage treatment company in Zhejiang Province were held last week for allegedly dumping household waste along the Yangtze River, threatening the water source on Chongming Island.
Local authorities said a massive load of garbage has floated onto the northern bank of the island.
Much of it accumulated near Dongfengxisha Reservoir, one of Shanghai’s four major water sources.
