2 Shanghai productions to open arts fest
TWO locally produced original stage works will open the 17th Shanghai International Art Festival tomorrow.
The musical, “Jews in Shanghai,” by Shanghai Heng Yuan Xiang Drama Development Company and contemporary ballet “Echoes of Eternity,” which has been co-produced by Shanghai Ballet and Shanghai Grand Theater Arts Center, will be staged at the Shanghai Culture Square and Shanghai Grand Theater respectively.
“Jews in Shanghai” narrates the story of Shanghai residents sheltering Jews in the city during the Second World War, while “Echoes of Eternity” dwells on the romance between Emperor Li Longji and his concubine in Tang Dynasty (618-907).
It will be the first time that two Shanghai-produced performances have been chosen to open the festival. It is also the first time that works by private art groups have been selected, said Liu Wenguo, the artistic director of the festival.
“Encouraging original creations has always been an important goal of the festival. There were no demands from private artistic groups. The two productions have done a great job of telling Chinese stories in international languages. That was the major reason for choosing them to open the festival,” Liu said.
