2 accused of cutting Internet cables

TWO former Internet company employees were arrested for cutting a competitor's cables, causing more than a thousand Internet users to be knocked offline for 35 hours, Huangpu District People's Procuratorate said today.

The two suspects, surnamed Hu and Xiao, who worked for Hongxiang Internet Company, had a dispute over payment for work with another Internet company, which refused to do further business with them on June 14.

The suspects drove to Huangpu District that day and decided to retaliate against the company, officials said.

They opened three fiber-optic cable cabinets at 9pm and cut several cables belonging to the company, which led to a large-scale outage in the area. The loss in this case reached more than 90,000 yuan (US$14,670).

The two were caught on June 23 and will face trial for destruction of public property.
