2 detained over theft of US$3,000 plant
TWO people have been detained in connection with the theft of a valuable plant from Shanghai Chenshan Botanical Garden, police said yesterday.
A cleaner at the park, which is located in Songjiang District, was the first to notice the Welwitschia mirabilis, or tree tumbo, had gone missing, and surveillance camera footage confirmed it had been stolen about noon on Monday by a man and woman.
The couple put the plant in a bag, left the park and then drove away in a black SUV, police said.
The suspects were detained later the same day, at separate locations in Fengxian District and Minhang District, they said.
The plant, which had had its roots trimmed and been transferred to a different pot, was recovered at one of the premises, they said.
The plant is a member of the psammophyte family of plants, which make their homes in shifting sands, like deserts.
The one stolen was grown from a seed purchased by the garden in 2008 for 20,000 yuan (US$3,000), police said.
