2 foreigners detained in aircraft fracas

Two foreigners were detained after they attacked a cabin crew member and destroyed equipment on board an aircraft respectively, Shanghai airport police said yesterday.

Police, however, refused to disclose the names and nationalities of the two passengers.

A 23-year-old foreigner boarded a Spring Airlines flight at Guangzhou airport on September 5 to fly to Shanghai. Upset at the flight’s delay for one and a half hours, he tried to complain when the plane was on the runway and about to take off.

When a crew member surnamed Du intervened, the passenger abused him in Chinese and hit him. Du suffered injuries on his left arm.

When the jet landed at Hongqiao International Airport, police detained him for five days.

On the same day, another foreigner, 35, got drunk on a China Eastern Airlines flight MU738 from Australia to Shanghai after consuming alcohol he bought in a duty-free shop at Melbourne Airport.

He hit the entertainment screen on the back of the seat in front of him and remote control, causing several thousand yuan in damages.

When the aircraft landed at Pudong International Airport, police detained him and he had to pay a fine of 18,000 yuan (US$2,942).

But the police didn’t release details of his detention.
