2 go to trial over fakes
TWO men who allegedly sold a large number of counterfeit World Expo and World Cup souvenirs will be tried next Tuesday at Pudong New Area People's Court.
Police confiscated more than 14,000 counterfeit items including plush toys, lighters and key rings.
Trademarks such as Haibao, the Expo logo, and South Africa 2010 were found on the fake items.
The items were estimated to be worth 460,000 yuan (US$67,747) if sold as genuine.
The duo surnamed Tian and Hu came to Shanghai before the Expo opened and rented a room.
They then went to Yiwu Small Commodities Market in Zhejiang Province to buy cheap counterfeit souvenirs and store them at a warehouse near the Expo site, prosecutors said. They were caught by police on May 8, only seven days after they started the business.
