2 jailed for credit card data fraud

TWO men who used forged credit cards data to make online purchases worth 600,000 yuan (US$95,820) were sentenced to up to eight years in jail, the Pudong New Area People’s Court said yesterday.

The chief culprit, surnamed Zhen, 24, found a posting of customers’ credit card information online in January last year, and paid 2,500 yuan for card information of more than 70 customers.

After buying the personal data, he logged on to a local teleshopping channel and bought expensive goods like gold and branded bags. He later asked a friend, surnamed Ma, to join him.

They bought more goods and shared the profits after selling them.

The court found that the duo spent about 600,000 yuan from the stolen information and pocketed more than 120,000 yuan from the sales.

Although the two argued that they had returned 160,000 yuan from the 600,000 yuan because the goods were not delivered, the court said the amount involved in the case was still high. It said they tried to use the money anyway to make purchases. The two were caught by police in April last year.
