2 men detained for damaging ICU
Two men have been detained for destroying facilities in the intensive care unit of a local hospital after their relative died while undergoing emergency treatment.
The relative, who suffered from nephritis syndrome, an inflammation of the kidneys, was moved to the ICU of Shanghai Shuguang Hospital, where he stopped breathing about 4:50pm on Thursday.
Six people, who were relatives of the 22-year-old Zhejiang Province man, broke into the ICU at 5:30pm when efforts to revive the patient were still going on.
They got emotional after doctors explained the relative’s situation and started destroying facilities in the ICU.
They broke a set of rescue equipment, a computer, stationery and medical documents as well as furniture inside the ICU. Two medical staff were injured.
Police arrived about 6pm and took away two men surnamed Wang and Ye, responsible for most of the damages, for disturbing public order.
According to police, the two were relatives of the patient and had lost control of their emotions on hearing the death.
It was reported that the patient had been treated in other hospitals in Shanghai and Zhejiang Province before being brought to Shuguang Hospital.
The hospital wanted to use imported medicine after the patient suffered a severe skin infection on Thursday morning. But it discovered later that the medicine was not available in Shanghai due to problems with the supplier.
The hospital then had to use other antibiotic medicines, which the relatives claimed had delayed the treatment and led to the patient’s condition deteriorating.
The damaged facilities were replaced yesterday and the ICU is operating normally.
Conflicts between doctors, patients and their relatives are not rare at the hospital but it’s the first time that equipment has been damaged, the hospital said.
