2 sharks die upon arrival at aquarium

TWO of four hammerhead sharks being flown from Taiwan to Shanghai died early yesterday soon after their arrival, aquarium officials said.

The other two were under close observation. The aquarium will announce their condition today or tomorrow.

The sharks were shipped in to take part in an exhibition at the Shanghai Changfeng Ocean World aquarium in July. Aquariums on the Chinese mainland haven't shown hammerhead sharks before because of the difficulties of artificial feeding.

Experts said hammerheads are vulnerable to injury because of their prominently protruding eyes, which are prone to a fatal allergy if hit.

The sharks reached Pudong International Airport on Tuesday afternoon and then driven slowly to the aquarium in Putuo District.

When trying to placing the sharks into the tank, one of the sharks bit a caretaker on the knee, but didn't cause much injury because the shark was not grown up.

At midnight, however, two sharks started to have abnormal reactions. Although vets tried their best, the animals were later announced dead.
