20% more women go on trial
THERE has been an almost 20 percent increase in the number of women going on trial in Jing’an District this year, compared to the same period in 2012.
Court officials said women accounted for about 14 percent of defendants at Jing’an People’s Court in the past eight months — a year-on-year rise of about 20 percent.
The court didn’t say how many cases were involved.
Court data showed theft, drug production and smuggling and possession of drugs were the top crimes committed by women.
Cases of thefts have doubled compared to last year.
Recently, more women have been working in tandem with their partners to commit crimes, the court said.
Officials said women from other parts of the country were more likely to be involved in minor thefts in Shanghai, while city natives were mostly involved in fraud and embezzlement.
Educational backgrounds were a factor, the court said.
