29 held for cellphone signal jam vice ring
A TOTAL of 29 people have been held by city police over an alleged prostitution ring in which hotel guests had their cellphone signals jammed and were sent texts offering sex services.
According to police, at night in recent months four suspects would cruise the city streets in two cars fitted with base stations — an illegal device that jams normal cellphone signals and sends out its own messages.
When they reached a hotel, ranging from local chains to five-star international names, the gang would switch on the device, said police.
Police said they would get 20 to 30 responses a night to their texts, with prices for prostitutes ranging from 800 yuan (US$125) to 2,000 yuan.
Three suspects, based in Langfang City of the northern China’s Hebei Province, are said to have answered calls and relayed their requirements to the alleged ringleader, surnamed Lu, in Shanghai.
According to police, Lu would contact a man surnamed Yang, to arrange for women to visit.
Drivers and women said to have been working as prostitutes have also been held.
Police said they started the investigation in mid-July after receiving a report from someone who had received one of the text messages.
