3 children die in city waterways

A 9-year-old girl died on Saturday after falling into a creek in the Pudong New Area, police said yesterday.
The incident happened about 2pm when the child, surnamed Qi, was playing with friends close to Shenshuang Road in the town of Zhoupu.
After slipping into the water, friends of the third-grader shouted for help and a passerby called the police. Officers pulled Qi from the creek and rushed her to hospital, but medical staff were unable to save her.
Also on Saturday, a 12-year-old girl and a 9-year-old boy drowned after falling into a stretch of water near Chongming Island.
The incident happened at 5pm as the youngsters were playing. Efforts to save them were in vain and the youngsters were pronounced dead about 6:30pm.
