3 fatality drivers get probation from court

THREE drivers, including two driving heavy vehicles, were each sentenced yesterday to one year in prison with probation of one year for causing traffic accidents that killed three people.

Judges from Jing'an District People's Court said they held public hearings of the three cases together in a bid to deter heavy-vehicle drivers after a rash of fatal traffic accidents.

Yet all the three drivers got suspended sentences. The judges noted the men had voluntarily surrendered to the police and made compensation to the victims' families.

Sun Wei, a judge who heard two of the cases, said employers should pay more attention to educating the drivers about safety. Neither of the two heavy vehicles involved in yesterday's cases met vehicle-safety requirements when the traffic accidents occurred.

Yan Hetai, driver of a local logistics company, drove a heavy tractor on Xiangyang Road N. on the afternoon of February 16, 2009 and Xu Shengzhi, a migrant worker from Anhui Province, was riding a bike in the same direction at the time.

The tractor hit Xu, who fell to the ground, smashed her head and died on the scene.

On the night of December 4, 2008, Wu Jindong, a driver for a mechanical company, drove a crane truck on Wanhangdu Road and hit a bike rider, Xie Jinhua. Xie also died of head injuries.

In the third case, Chen Guorong drove his daughter to school on November 9, 2008 and opened the car door after parking. The victim, Sun Baogen, passed by on an electric bike and hit the open door. He died of brain injury.
