3 killed by manhole's toxic fumes were thieves
Three people who were apparently overcome by toxic gases and fainted in a manhole in Baoshan District, and who died yesterday evening in the hospital, were identified as thieves, police said today.
A suspect surnamed Tian who made an emergency call at the scene had claimed they were all electricity company workers but later admitted to police they were trying to steal cables.
Three of the people in a gang of 5 collapsed in the manhole at 6:38pm yesterday near Gonghexin Road. Tian called 120 immediately and stopped passing firefighters, saying they were electricity company workers and asked for help. The firefighters pulled out the three unconscious people and they were sent to the hospital.
The electricity company Tian claimed to work for said it didn’t have any workers in the area yesterday.
Tian said after the three people fainted, one member of the gang fled.
The electricity company said it would help local police in investigating and collecting evidence.
