3 killed in Songjiang fire

THREE people were killed and the same number injured after a fire broke out in a house in suburban Chedun area in Songjiang District early yesterday, police said.
Police were alerted at 1:37am and the fire was put out 20 minutes later.
The brick-and-wood house was built by a local villager, surnamed Ma, who lived on the third floor with his wife. Ma had rented out the first two floors to people from outside the area, neighbors told xinmin.cn.
The neighbors heard calls for help at about 1am. The tenants who lived on the first two floors managed to escape, but the couple on the top floor did not make it.
Another tenant from Sichuan Province also died in the fire.
The injured were discharged from the hospital yesterday.
The xinmin.cn report claimed that the fire could be related to a short-circuit with several people — almost a dozen — charging electric bikes in the house.
Moreover, the tenants living on the first floor reportedly used wood for cooking.
Police however said it was still investigating the cause of fire.
